Throngs of Women – Including One Mick Jagger Ex – Entertained by Egg-centric Speaker

If there’s one common denominator among entrepreneurs and small business owners, it’s that they never cease to amaze you.

Examples were plentiful at the 2006 kick-off dinner for the New England Women Business Owners (NEWBO) organization, where emcee and NEWBO President Susan LaPlante-Dube warmed up the audience with introductions of board members and the “hidden lives” that trail them. Long-standing members and newcomers alike discovered they were in the company of – among others – an Olympic torch carrier, a Corvette collector, and one mild-mannered business owner who once dated the legendary Mick Jagger.

If that’s not a “uniquifier,” what is?

“A ‘uniquifier’ is a certain ‘Wow!’ factor about you, your company, or your products and services,” explained Jane Pollak, an internationally-known entrepreneur, professional speaker, and the main attraction for the NEWBO monthly mixer. Pollak, whose appearance was sponsored by Xerox, coined the word ‘uniquifier’ to call out the “neat and interesting” edge that sets you apart from your competition and makes you and your objectives especially attractive to the press.

“It’s the idea of the ‘uniquifier’ that really grabbed my attention,” said NEWBO guest Mo Bresee, Co-founder of MoJo Productions, a Creative Event Management firm located in Boston. “My partner and I are not your average corporate event planners – we’re really experience makers. So building our messaging around that distinction might be the way to go.”

Pollak’s presentation, “Million Dollar Presence on a $0 Budget: Tips and Tools for Getting Your Name in the Media,” drew a full-capacity crowd. Members, guests, and walk-ins took vigorous notes as Pollak shared her own unlikely artist-to-riches story, itself an homage to the power of the “uniquifier.” Pollak’s success was built around none other than the fine art of decorating eggs.

By integrating Ukrainian egg techniques with designs and flair all her own, Pollak has garnered features in the New York Times, USA Today, and Country Living magazine, as well coveted appearances on HGTV, CBS News, and NBC’s award-winning Today Show.

But Pollak wasn’t the only speaker of the evening to bring value and delight to the mix of ambitious businesswomen.

Daren Coudriet, Managing Partner of WSI Collaborative Solutions, announced to NEWBO members that his firm will generously donate a new “web solution” to accommodate NEWBO’s growing membership.

“Most websites – especially ones created by and for small business owners – lack focus and provide little benefit,” said Coudriet, a 20-year Internet and Information Technology Expert with advanced degrees in Engineering and Business Administration. “WSI’s overall mission is to help companies understand the difference between a website and a profitable web solution – which is a customized, business-based process aimed at maximizing and delivering measurable results.”

Courdriet looks forward to unveiling the revamped NEWBO site and demonstrating firsthand what a difference his “profitable web solution” provides for small businesses and the people who run them.
